Common questions
How does scoring work?
You read a known sentence. A speech service compares each sound you made with the text, and Schwa looks only at the lesson’s target sound to give you one next step. Scores are training signals, not a measure of how native you sound.
Schwa says it couldn’t score my recording.
This usually means the audio was too quiet or noisy. Hold the phone about a hand’s length away, move away from fans, traffic or a TV, and speak at your normal volume. Attempts that couldn’t be scored don’t count toward your progress.
I turned off microphone access by mistake.
Open iPhone Settings → Schwa → Microphone and turn it on. Schwa only listens while you’re recording.
How do I keep my progress when I change phones?
Sign in with Apple or Google (Account → Sign in). On the new phone, tap Sign in on the welcome screen with the same account and your plan comes back.
How do I delete my recordings or my account?
In the app, go to Account → Your data. “Delete my recordings” removes any kept recordings; “Delete account and progress” removes everything. See the Privacy Policy for details.
Which devices are supported?
iPhone with iOS 17 or later. Schwa isn’t available for Android.
How do I say “Schwa”?
“Shwah”, rhyming with “spa”. It’s the name of /ə/, the most common sound in English, like the “a” in “about”.
